Oregon District Historic Home Remodel in Dayton, Ohio

Historic Home Remodel

Preserving Character While Enhancing Functionality

This project was especially meaningful for our team at Zengel Group. Located in Dayton Ohio’s historic Oregon District, this home renovation brought our family’s legacy full circle, the Zengel family originally began building homes in this very neighborhood generations ago. Restoring and modernizing a home here was both a privilege and a nod to our deep roots in Dayton’s architectural history.

This historic home remodel turned an Oregon District Duplex into a single family home that blends historic preservation with modern functionality. The renovation involved thoughtful updates to the kitchen, bathrooms, and living spaces, maintaining the home’s original charm while improving flow and efficiency. Structural framing, updated mechanical systems, and new finishes were thoughtfully integrated to meet today’s building code standards while honoring the home’s heritage and charm.

Custom Kitchen with Frameless Cabinetry and Cambria Quartz

The kitchen became a true centerpiece of the home, designed with custom frameless cabinetry for a clean, modern aesthetic that complements the historic architecture. Beautiful Cambria quartz countertops provide a timeless surface, while while the full-height splashes create a true focal point. Every selection was made with care to balance craftsmanship, convenience, and character.

Unique Details and Modern Touches

While preserving the home’s craftsmanship, we also introduced creative design elements that make this renovation truly one of a kind. A Murphy door bookcase was incorporated to connect the living room to the primary suite, a playful and functional nod to hidden historic charm. A 10-foot sliding glass door now opens the living room to the backyard, flooding the space with natural light and creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. And perhaps one of the most distinctive features, an automated cellar hatch door, was designed to blend perfectly with the wood floors, offering convenient access to the basement while maintaining a clean, uninterrupted look.

A Connection to Legacy and Community

Beyond the craftsmanship, this renovation tells a story, one of renewal and continuity. Working on a historic home remodel in the Oregon District in Dayton, Ohio, allowed our team to honor the past while building for the future, echoing the same values that have guided Zengel Group for four generations.
